Do YOU have a place to pump at work? Let's support nursing moms at work!

Happy World Breastfeeding Week! Did you know one-third of new mothers return to work within 3 months after childbirth and two-thirds return within 6 months? Many find it difficult to return to balance returning to their workplace and sustaining breastfeeding while working. Several years ago, as a part of the Affordable Care Act, employers are now required to provide reasonable break time for an employee to pump at work and a private place to do so.

Recognizing this time can be challenging for both employers and mothers, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health (OWH) developed Supporting Nursing Moms at Work: Employer Solutions. This is a new national initiative for employers of nursing moms, particularly those in hourly jobs or settings that are more challenging for pumping at work. You can access the new toolkit by visiting www.womenshealth.gov/breastfeeding/at-work.

  1. I never had to pump, but I did notice a special room the last place I worked. It was a little dark but still just for new moms.
