consulting careers: tips and tricks

Research Consulting Careers

Beyond the tips in this one blog post, research the types of consulting careers in high demand out there! I’ve seen everything from bloggers, to management consultants who help big Forbes 500 businesses. If you’re adamant about sharing your knowledge, you can earn a living starting a consulting business.

Get Your Name Out There

Consulting can be a great way to earn an income and become your own boss. One of the first steps to take would be to create a website and maintain a social media presence. Social media and word of mouth advertising are good ways to gain clients. You’ll want to also network with other consultants.

Have A Place To Meet

As a writer who works from home, I know what a challenge this can be. If you have your office in your home, or even in the corner of your bedroom, that’s fine. You can find professional public meeting spots or meet in the offices of your clients.

Be Prepared Financially

As most small business owners know, clients don’t always pay on time. Whether it’s a line of credit or you have a savings account, make sure you can cover your own financial obligations. You’ll want to also become familiar with a way to organize business finances or hire a professional to do it for you.

Come Prepared

You’ll want to be prepared to show potential clients what you can do. If you are newer at consulting, show them examples of your work. Talk yourself up while being honest about your experience. A client may still be hesitant to hire you, but offer to start with a small job to demonstrate your abilities.

Learn About Your Clients

Be sure to pay attention to what your client’s wants and needs are. You’ll want to know their background, what they are passionate about, and what they specifically need help with. Doing this will allow you to lay out an organized plan that will be mutually beneficial to both parties. Use your best problem solving skills and think outside of the box!

Have Testimonials

This is another way to really sell yourself. You’ll have clients who want to read testimonials or reviews from your past clients. This is an easy way to show that you’ve got the skill set you claim to have. You can show off your success stories and also know you’re making a difference in the lives of others.

Be Available

Whether you’re going to be available 24/7 or keep office hours, let your clients know how to contact you. Obviously, emails, phone, and text messaging are probably the most popular options. Be prepared to answer a ton of questions and give suggestions for your clients. Some will want to communicate more than others.

Hopefully with these tips you’ll be a little more ready to start your own consulting business. With the right amount of skills and determination, you will go far. In time, you’ll build strong client relationships and fulfilling your dreams.
