DIY Deodorant Recipe by Brittany of The Pistachio Project

As the summer starts to kick into gear, the weather gets warmer and that’s the time when we really start relying on our deodorant to keep us from smelling. However, if you are using conventional deodorant it might be causing more harm than good!

What’s Lurking in Your Deodorant?

Have you ever looked at the ingredient list on your deodorant? Conventional deodorants are full of ingredients, most of which we can barely pronounce. Many of those ingredients can be quite harmful. Aluminum is a big one. It’s been linked to toxicity of the organs. Another big toxin is Fragrance. It seems harmless enough, it just makes it smell pretty, right? But in reality it can cause immune system issues, allergies, organ toxicity, and it’s also not so great for the environment.

What Deodorant to Use

The good news is that it’s not hard to make your own deodorant. That’s right, I said make! We are getting a little DIY today! Why make your own deodorant? If you make it yourself, you know exactly what is in it. You can customize it to fit your needs – need it less harsh? Use less baking soda. And it’s pretty inexpensive, especially if you happen to have the ingredients already.

DIY Deodorant

4 tbs coconut oil
2 tbs baking soda
2 tbs arrowroot powder (or non-gmo cornstarch)
Mix baking soda and arrowroot powder in a small bowl. Add in slightly warm coconut oil. Mix well. Transfer mixture to a cleaned out old deodorant tube or clean container. Place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to harden. 
Note: Coconut oil and thus diy deodorant can melt in temperatures about 76 degrees. If it’s warm in your home, you might want to keep the deodorant in a jar instead of a deodorant tube or keep the deodorant tube in the refrigerator.

    Does this work to help stop the sweating too? I need an antiperspirant.

    Does this work well for scented deodorant? Could an essential oil be added to make it smell nice?

    I always forget to buy deodorant at the store and this is a great DIY because I'm certain I have these ingredients!

    This is a great idea for traveling since you could take a small amount in your carryon when flying.

    I will try it and see if it works. I find myself switching brands every couple months because the old brand doesn't work anymore, but I am willing to try almost anything

    I've never tried DIY deodorant before. I wonder how it would hold up during a sweaty workout.
