- Luke 2:14
I’d like to apologize to everyone for the lack of content lately. Like everyone else, I have been really busy with Christmas related events. Last week, I had a Christmas Party and cookie exchange with my MOPS group. And today, we had our 4 year old’s Christmas party at his school. Santa Claus visited his school as a surprise and wow, he loved that!
Now, for a while, my husband and I debated whether or not we would do the the Santa “thing”. As we’re raising our children to be followers of Christ, we really implement the story of Jesus’ birth and that being the real meaning of the season. Of course, with our oldest being in preschool this year, more mainstream ideas get to him than it would if he were not in school. So we went back and forth about it for a while and finally made our decision…
Growing up, my mom and dad did both sides of the story. I think that my husband was taught good ideas, but didn’t go to church a whole lot as a kid and therefore had a more secular idea of Christmas. As a child, I remember going to visit Santa, waiting up for him on Christmas Eve, and leaving cookies and egg nog (not milk! :P) out for him. My mom also put out a nativity scene, we went to church Christmas functions, and we were taught about the story of Jesus’ birth. I think that my parents did a good job of making Christmas fun with the idea of Santa Claus and making sure we knew the real meaning for Christmas!
My 4 year old tells me that he’s going to Jesus’ birthday and he also talks about leaving out Double Stuffed Oreo Cookies for Santa Claus. I really do think we’re doing a good job of teaching him the same thing I was taught growing up. I am looking forward to watching our kids learn and grow with the love of Jesus. I know that we can also have fun doing the Santa Claus thing. All in all, I just want to let them be little.
